Kingwood Players to Watch

A great tournament again this year folks, some really good hoops was played I wish we could have seen more than we did but we can't be everywhere. The most impressive player to us was 6-3 PG class of 2005 Monta Ellis with the Magnolia Stars. He has awesome skills, over 30 points in both games we saw. The write-ups for day one and two of the tournament can be found on our message boards, either on the national high school board or the Texas high school board. Enjoy.

The New York Gauchos are your 2003 Kingwood Classic champs. The Gauchos defeated Team Memphis in the title game 85-57. MVP Russell Robinson(2004, Manhattan Rice) led the Gauchos with 23 points. Robinson was hot all day as he got 22 in a semi-final win over Team Texas. LaMarcus Aldridge was dominant in the game for Texas scoring 24 points grabbing 12 boards and blocking 3 shots. The only other Texan in double figures was Pavlius Packevicius with 11 points and 5 boards.

We caught the Houston Hoops in action earlier in the day against the Florida Prep Stars. The Hoops came out with an eight point win in a good ball game. Jawaan McClellan (Arizona commit) had 27 points and 6 rebounds to lead the Hoops. Matt Wheaton added 7 points and Rodney Foster 8 for Houston. Florida was led by 2004 PG Alex "Red" Gordon (5-9 Pensacola) who had 15 points and 4 assists. 6-6 WF Derrick Simmons (Lake Wales, FL) added 12 points and 10 rebounds including 2 three pointers.

The 16 under Dallas Mustangs gave the highly rated D.C. Blue Devils fits before falling 74-61. Isaiah Swann's four three pointers in less than 3 minutes helped D.C. put away the stubborn 'Stangs. A big story on the Dallas Mustangs back to back AAU champs can be accessed by clicking here. Team Texas reached the round of 8 by hanging on for a one point win over DTA Wisconsin. LaMarcus Aldridge fouled out, but 2004 BF Kevin Langford (North Crowley) stepped up with two big FT's to give Texas the lead. Dupree Fletcher's shot as time ran out rimmed out.

The New York Gauchos downed Nike Team Florida by 10 in the round of eight. The Gauchos were able to withstand the impact of Florida's high scoring wings 2004 WG Jason Rich (Orlando Dr. Phillips) and 2005 WF Keith Brumbaugh (DeLand, FL). Russell Robinson got hot here and stayed hot the rest of the day. California Team Select eliminated the Albany City Rocks in the round of 8 behind strong play of WG Josh Shipp. 7-1 C Robert Swift looked good for California and gave Rocks BF 6-6 Dayshaun Wright fits. YOMCA Team Memphis disposed of the DC Blue Devils in the quarters, 5-9 PG Andre Allen pushed the tempo and his big long forwards 6-9 Jerrel Houston and 6-8 Shawn Williams finished the break. DC's best inside player of the day was 6-8 BF James Gist who outplayed heralded teammate Brian Johnson.
