College Station Championship Day Recap (days 1 and 2 recaps are below today's)
Day four is complete and your champions have been crowned. Houston Select went undefeated en route to the NBA Division title. They downed the Austin Dawgs in the final, had their closest call in a two point win over the Texas Top Prospects 2003 in the semi's, and this morning downed Ft. Worth MLK Mash in another close game. The Houston Hoops 15's took home the title in the NCAA downing the Corpus Christi Panthers in the final. Let's get to our top performers of the day, then we'll get to our recap and stats, finally we'll finish with our all tourney team.
Here's who stepped up big on the final day:
Larry Posey 6-5 BF Houston Select (Houston Milby HS)- Huge performance by the big man today going for 28 points in the title game and 23 in the semifinals. Fine performance for the tourney MVP.
Roderick Rogers 6-4 F Texas Top Prospects 2003 (Dallas Lincoln HS)- 24 points including 4 three pointers and some NASTY slams in the semi-final loss to Houston Select. Barely missed being a hero as his game winning three rimmed out.
A.J. Abrams 5-10 G Austin Dawgs (Round Rock McNeil HS) c/o 2005- 23 in the quarters and 26 in the semifinals for the sharp shooting Abrams.
Gary Flowers 6-8 F Dallas Mustangs (Dallas Roosevelt HS) c/o 2005- 26 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks in the quarters as Flowers made a GREAT showing this weekend.
Rodney Foster 6-0 G Houston Hoops (Katy Mayde Creek HS)- 26 points in the semifinals, and a game winner in the quarterfinals for Foster.
Derrick Roberts 6-3 G Houston Select ( Aldine Nimitz HS)- Roberts had a huge title game with 12 points and 10 assists, plus 14 points in the semi's. Derrick had a VERY impressive performance this past weekend.
Curtis "C.J." Jerrells 6-1 G ATX Boys 16's (Austin Del Valle HS)- Jerrells was big for ATX all day. We saw him get 15 points, grab 9 boards and hand out 5 assists in a win over the Southside All Stars.

Now to our game by game recaps-
We started the day at 9 with a little double dip from the quarterfinals of the NCAA bracket. Houston Select #2 pounded the Austin Dawgs #2. Select was led by BF's Peter Stein and Obi Ikeakor. WF Sean Coleman was impressive as well. Those three are all class of 2005 from Westbury Christian. 2006 G Quentin Guidry of Heritage Christian impressed as well, as did 2005 G Aldric Reynolds of Aldine Nimitz. In the other game we saw at 9, the Houston Hoops 15's downed the North Texas Rice Owls 77-55. 2006 BF Chris Rocquemore of Jersey Village led the way with 19 points. 2006 Johnathan Brown of Port Arthur Memorial added 14, and 2006 G/F Jerrod Johnson of Humble chipped in 11, as did 2006 F Robert Tibbs of Pearland. The Owls were led by 2005 WF Mike Miller of Dallas Jesuit who had 13.
At 10:20, we caught another double header, from the consolation bracket of the NBA division. ATX Boys behind the 13 second half points from Curtis Jerrells downed the Southside All Stars 67-63. Jerrells a 2005 G from Del Valle ended with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. 2005 WF Malcolm Johnson of Austin Anderson added 13. Southside was paced by 2004 G Corey Jefferson of Angleton who poured in 21 including 3 threes. In the other game we saw at this time, Cedar Hill downed the Dallas Mustangs White 64-56. Cedar Hill was led by 2005 Terry Roney who had 14, and 2005 G Josh Boswel had 12. 2005 F Brian Giddings added 11. The Mustangs were led by 2005 WG Terrel Harris of Richardson Lake Highlands who poured in 22. 2005 PG Marvin Storey of North Crowley had 13 and 2005 F Derrick Moore of Dallas Lincoln who had 12.
In the 11:40 game, we saw the Austin Dawgs upset the Dallas Mustangs #1 82-72. 2005 G A.J. Abrams of Round Rock McNeil had 23 followed by 2004 G Matt Braeuer of Belton who had 17. The Mustangs were paced by 2005 F Gary Flowers of Dallas Roosevelt who had 26 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks. 2005 G Booker Woodfox of Lewisville added 14. In other NBA quarterfinal action, Houston Select ousted Ft. Worth MLK Mash by 10, the Texas Top Prospects 2003 downed the Houston Lynx, and Rodney Foster hit a driving layup as time expired to lead the Houston Hoops to a comeback win over the Southeast Texas All Stars. Foster was huge down the stretch for the Hoops canning 2 contested threes late in the comeback.
In the semi finals of the NBA the Austin Dawgs hung on for a close win over the Houston Hoops 89-87, eliminating the Hoops. It was still a good performance by a team missing its' best two players (both in the top 5 in Texas, top 30 nationally who are in France with a traveling USA squad) , the Hoops fought hard all weekend, making several comeback bids but this one fell short. A.J. Abrams paced the Dawgs with 26, followed by Matt Braeuer's 14 and 2004 F Chuck Foster of Austin LBJ's 14 and 2004 Round Rock Westwood BF Robbie Cowgill's 13. 2004 G Rodney Foster (Rice commit) led the way for the Hoops with 26 points and 5 assists. His Katy Mayde Creek HS teammate WF Matt Wheaton chipped in with 19. 2004 F's Mike Nichols (Westbury HS) added 12, and Jeralye Franklin (Bay City) had 9. 2004 BF Jermaine Griffith of Houston Sterling had 11. The other semi-final was the best match up of the day. Houston Select defeated the Texas Top Prospects 2003 83-82, as 2004 Dallas Lincoln WF Roderick Rogers' 3 pointer was just long. Select was paced by 2004 Houston Milby BF Larry Posey who had 23. He was followed in double digits by 2004 Aldine Nimitz G Derrick Roberts with 14, 2004 Ft. Bend Bush WG Chamberlain Oguchi's 12, 2004 Normangee BF/C Joseph Jones' 12, and 2004 Spring Westfield PG Marlon Davis' 13. The Top Prospects were led by 2004 Dallas Lincoln WF Roderick Rogers who had 24. He was followed by 2004 Arlington Martin PG John Killen's 13 and 2005 DeSoto WF Roderick Fleming's 14.
In the NCAA Semi's the Houston Hoops 15's advanced over the Hoops 16's squad in a game we didn't get to see. The other game saw the Corpus Christi Panthers beat Houston Select #2 by 3 points in overtime.
In the NCAA final the Houston Hoops 15's shook off an early deficit to hammer the Corpus Christi Panthers 68-46. 2006 Jerrod Johnson of Humble was on fire with 6 threes and 21 points. He was followed by 2006 PA Memorial F Johnathan Brown who had 9. 2006 Jersey Village F Chris Roquemore added 7.
In the NBA final, Houston Select downed the Austin Dawgs 76-67. Select never trailed in the ball game, and held a double digit lead for over half the contest. Their lead of 16 points mid way thru the second half was chipped away at until Austin tied it at 63. Select closed the game on a 13-4 run to pull away for the win. 2004 BF Larry Posey was big with 28 points and 6 rebounds. 2004 BF/C Joseph Jones of Normangee was big also with 14 points and 20 rebounds. G Derrick Roberts was silky smooth in the backcourt, scoring 12 points and handing out 10 assists. 2004 WG Chamberlain Oguchi of Ft. Bend Bush added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. The Dawgs were led by 2004 F Chuck Foster's 20 points and 6 rebounds. 2004 G Matt Braeuer added 18 and 2005 G A.J. Abrams added 17. Select is so long and athletic on the perimeter, at times going with Roberts (6-4) at the point. Their size, speed quickness and leaping ability stopped the Dawgs from canning the 3 pointers they'd used to upset teams earlier. Select was mighty, and when the 2004 rankings are updated expect to see 3 members of Houston Select in the top 10 in Texas.
It was a good weekend of hoops in College Station. We missed getting looks at some top 10 players in each class. In 2004 Daniel Gibson and Jawaan McClellan were in France and didn't play for the Houston Hoops. In 2005, the Dallas Mustangs were without Austin and Aaron Jackson, and in 2006 the Hoops 15's shook off the absence of Nic Wise (France) to win the NCAA title anyway. Many squads had great games this past weekend. Here's our all tourney team (NBA first)

In other action the San Antonio Bulls hung on to beat the NCI Hoopstars Elite 60-58. The Bulls were led by 2004 San Antonio Sam Houston G Jarrett Dillard's 14 points. NCI was paced by 2004 F Ryan Bright (Deer park) who had 12. Other action saw Cedar Hill down Team Fort Worth and the San Antonio Rohawks destroy the Red River All Stars.

At 2:20 the crazy day began. The Austin Dawgs were RED HOT against Team Texas 16/15's canning 15 threes in the game. The Dawgs had a 2 point lead with 10 seconds to go, when Lionel Booker was fouled and got two shots. Booker made the first, and as he shot the second, Darrell Arthur as instructed by his coaches, stood in the middle of the lane which was a lane violation and negated the make. Team Texas then allowed the Dawgs to run out the clock. Their explanation was that by losing on purpose they advanced to first place on points, and if they'd have gone to the 2 minute overtime and lost by more than 8, they would not have advanced to the championship pool. Not much confidence, but a strange ending no doubt????? No more comments on this one by TRB. The Dawgs were led by Matt Braeuer's 26 and 2005 Round Rock McNeil PG AJ Abrams' 16. Dallas SOC big men 2005 Kevin Rogers had 18 points and 10 boards, and 2006 Darrell Arthur had 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocks to pace Team Texas.
At 3:40 we caught the Dallas Mustangs #2 give the Houston Hoops 17's all they wanted in a 4 point loss. 2004 Katy Mayde Creek teammates Matt Wheaton and Rodney Foster led the Hoops back from a big deficit. 2004 WG Terrel Harris of Richardson Lake Highlands was big for Dallas as was 2005 PG Marvin Storey of North Crowley.
We took a break before the big championship round started at 6:20. There we saw the Dallas Mustangs #1 down the Texas Top Prospects 17's 68-56. 2005 PG Byron Eaton was unstoppable with 32 followed by 2005 G Booker Woodfox's 11 for the Mustangs. For the Tops, 2004 G Red White of Dallas Molina led the way with 14, followed by 2005 WF Ryan Boyd of Dallas Seagoville who had 8. Also at 6:20 the Texas Tops 2003 routed Team Texas 16/15's. Tops 2003 were led by 2004 Dallas Lincoln F Rodrick Rodgers who had 13. Also for the Tops, 2005 WF Roderick Fleming of DeSoto had 10, 2004 Cedar Hill G Roderick Adams had 11 and 2004 Arlington Martin PG John Killen added 9. For Team Texas, again it was the SOC inside tandem of 2005 Kevin Rogers with 14 and 8, and 2006 Darrell Arthur with 12 and 7. We then caught 2004 G Keithan Hancock of Kountze help the Southeast Texas All Stars eliminate the San Antonio Bulls. Houston Select also eliminated the NCI Hoopstars Elite.
In the nightcap Dunbar downed the Arlington Magic 77-75, but it was a rough evening for Jeremis Smith, as he was saddled with foul trouble and double, even triple teamed at times. Smith did a great job being unselfish putting up 10 points and 8 boards, as the other Flying Wildcats picked up the slack, 2004 PG Dominique Williams had a triple double with 22 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds; while 2004 G Jeff Muriel added 18 points (6 threes), 9 rebounds and 7 assists. For the Arlington Magic, 2005 G Anthony Thomas of Arlington High had 29 points, and 2004 BF Kellen Allen of Mansfield Summitt added 23 points and 5 boards. 2005 WF Clarence Masters of Cedar Hill had 8 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. We leave you with the dunks of the day.
Jeremis Smith of MLK Mash had some nice jams as did Gary Flowers of the Mustangs. C.J. Clark of Houston Select had a huge follow dunk but let's leave you with our dunk of the day.
2005 WG Terrel Harris of Richardson Lake Highlands and the Dallas Mustangs White caught the rock on the break.
