South Texas AAU Qualifier Recap
Great final day of hoops action from the Dallas Mustangs tourney. We left before the finals, but the Tulsa Jr. Hurricanes downed the Mustangs to win the 17&under, while the 15&under went to the Dallas Mustangs over the DFW Magic.
Our day started at Bishop Lynch at 8 a.m. for the Dallas Mustangs 15&under against the Dallas Dirty Dozen 15's. The Mustangs dominated throughout the ball game and won it 55-24. 2006 WG Donald Sloan of Dallas Seagoville led the Mustangs with 18 points (8-15 fg) 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Sloan has a nice jumper, and scored 14 points in the first six minutes. Sloan's running mate 2006 WG Derrick Roland of Dallas Seagoville chipped in 10 points (4-8 fg 2-2 ft), including two dunks, he also added 3 rebounds and an assist. 2006 F Grady Green of Plano had 8 points (3-4 fg 2-2 ft) to go with 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. 2006 BF Jerrald Bonham (Plano West) added 6 points and 8 rebounds, and 2006 G Marcus Brister of Duncanville had 5 points 3 rebounds and 3 assists. The Mustangs were without 2006 F Mike Frazier of Dallas Spruce in the morning game when we saw them. This is a very athletically gifted team, Donald Sloan is a very special player, Derrick Roland is definitely one of the elite top talents in 2006 as well. Mustangs PG Nic Grant of Arlington Oak Ridge handed out 4 assists in limited minutes of the blowout win. The Mustangs would go on to win the 15&under tournament with a win over the DFW Magic. Marcus Brister was selected MVP. This team has a chance to make some noise at the national AAU tourney.
We slid over to the 17's and 16's at Lincoln next for the 10:30 game between the ATX Boys and the Dallas Dirty Dozen 17's. 2005 G Curtis "C.J." Jerrells of Del Valle led ATX back from a 6 point deficit with 2 minutes to play. ATX won the game in overtime 37-34. Jerrells turned in another solid performance with 15 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. 2005 G/F Adrian Thomas of Del Valle chipped in 7 and 2005 G Torin Moore of Austin St. Stephens added 5. The only down note was a tough fall on the small of the back for 2005 WF Malcolm Johnson of Austin Anderson. Johnson had to be helped off and did not play the rest of the day. He left with 2 points and 6 rebounds. ATX was eliminated in the semi's by the Tulsa Jr. Hurricanes.
The Dallas Mustangs 16's Blue downed the Texas Warriors #1 41-31 in the next game we saw. 2005 PG Byron Eaton (#1 2005 TR) of Dallas Lincoln led the Mustangs with 18 points. He was aided by 2005 F Gary Flowers of Dallas Roosevelt who had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 blocked shot. 2004 BF Sean Williams of Mansfield was in some foul trouble, and was held to 4 points and 2 blocked shots. New Mustang addition 2005 BF/C Ashton "A.J." Wilson of Aldine contributed solid minutes with 2 points, 2 blocks and a rebound.
Our last game of the day pitted two 16 year old squads. The Texas Wolverines held off the Dallas Mustangs White 51-38. The Wolverines were paced by 2005 G Catrell Currie of Cedar Hill (formerly Dallas Spruce) who had 16 points, including 3 threes. 2005 WF Roderick Fleming of DeSoto was again very impressive today. Fleming had 12 points and 10 rebounds, included were two nasty dunks, one windmill, and a one two handed flush that Currie tossed off of the window for him. Fleming looks more and more like an elite big time talent in this class. Cedar Hill BF Bishop Wheatley added 8 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks for the Wolverines. 2005 WG Terrel Harris of Richardson Lake Highlands had 10 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Mustangs white.
Notes: Dallas Mustangs #1 played without Booker Woodfox and both Jacksons today. This factored into their play in the title game and their struggles in the semi's.
